ground covers in full sun

I have an area that gets a lot of sun, in summer 12 hours plus. I want to plant some ground cover around the plants I have in the area so basicly I dont have to mow the grass there. I have some phlox ready to plant and they say full sun but dont want to go and spend a ton of money on cover that might not survive well there. The area I want is 14x53 feet give or take.

I have a dry hillside that bakes in the blazing summer sun. It's covered with a variety of sedums and some rug junipers. The trick is to plant them in little pockets cut into the slope so each plant can catch a fair share of water when it rains. Unfortunately, the sedums are loose and I do have to spend time weeding the hill. Good luck.

I have a couple sedums already so will get them and a couple phlox's in shortly. I will have to look in to the rug junipers. Thanks!
