Stonecrop Garden

Was planning a trip there this morning but that blessed rain intervened so now it's scheduled for Thursday. I hope everyone in the area knows about this garden on Route 301 near Fahnestock State Park. Haven't been in a few years but always come back with ideas. Last time it was a Stewartia tree in full bloom that caught my eye and I planted one the following year - it is about to flower for the first time.
They no longer require a reservation but there is an entry fee. Fabulous rock garden, perennial beds, roses, vegetable garden, woods gardens, gunnera, ferns, hostas - it goes on an on.

Did you go?
I came across Stonecrop online, looking for info on, guess what, Stonecrop (Sedum).

I didn't really grasp that it was around here and open to the public
until your post.
I skimmed around the Gunneras and Cannas and in my mind decided
it was in NC or somewhere else too far.

I just found this link and have been drooling ever since.
Now would be such a great time, too, curious to see what they do between
the June flush and the later crops all budding now, but leaving things
a little in between *green*.

If I can find a day next week, maybe...

Campanula latifolia was in bloom and if you go don't miss the wisteria arbor with its resident frog and Mrs. Cholmondley clematis. Lilies were flowering and roses and.... The gardeners were busy setting out annuals but what we admired most was stewartia camelliaflora - a big tree just coming into full bloom. I had seen this four years ago and promptly ordered one for my garden - it has three (3) buds this year though it is still fairly small.
I was particularly taken with a dwarf willow (salix repens something or other) with very unwillow like foliage, fuzzy and almost white - from a distance it looked as if it were blooming.

Ok, that's it, I'm going!
Made arrangements with an old friend for Wednesday. Can't believe it!
I NEVER get to any public gardens.
I'm bringing a camera, they said that's ok,
and a note book!
Hope the Stewartia is still blooming!

Thanks for the push Oldroser.
What fabulous gardens!
Very uncommercial, no crowds, kids, dogs, sodas.
A very busy person in the potting shed who hastily showed us the map,
we got delightfully lost immediately, best way to go if you ask me.

I also appreciated the general aura of "we're working, enjoy",
no spotless "showtime" beds, lovely tangle of thoughtful plantings
that somebody obviously had a very good time putting together.

I loved the raised stone "landscape" with 3" shrubs and mini Campanulas
crawling down the walls!

I'll be going back later this season and next May/June!

I was at Stonecrop yesterday with some friends - we all brought our cameras. The outdoor gardens are still in late winter/early early spring - only galanthus and forsythia are in bloom - but the atriums were lovely with freesias and tropical bloomers. Well worth a trip to Stonecrop anytime. Click the link below the photos for tons more pix.

Thanks for the pictures. I'm using that top one as my desktop background. It looks even better blown up.
