Now it's almost over, how did your bulbs do?

Gotta read up on Fritillarias.
The only ones that came up strong and healthy were the 'Persica',
which are supposedly marginal here.
Not ONE 'Crown Imperial'. Pricey buggers, too! 3 for 17.00 I think.
Gave them wood ashes too, and food, and drainage.
Everything else was gorgeous! Except Tulipa 'Artist', pictured
as burnt orangey/green. It was a washed-out beige-gray pink.
The hardy Glad.'Byzantinus' are just starting.
And the late Alliums.
One tulip, a multi flowering, called 'Antoinette', is amazing!
Many weeks of creamy yellow slowly changing to deep blush rose.
I'm re-ordering that one, and the black peony flowering one,
'Black hero', Blacker by far than 'Queen of the night'.
Hooray for rotten egg deer spray!
I did pack them in a bit too tight.
In "Mass graves" as Lauren Springer calls them.
How were yours?
What do you plant with them? I didn't succeed with either Wallflowers
or Mysotis this year. |

| A vole took out about a dozen tulips before he finally succumbed to mouse poison. Had a great display of White Triumphator and Sorbet tulips and the cheapies I bought last fall at the end of the season from Lowe's did well too but had small flowers. Had a good display of nectarscordum siculum and right now allium christophii is coming into bloom and looks great. For the very first time had success with hoop petticoat daffs - what little charmers they are! And this was the year that narcissus alba plena, the old-fashioned, very fragrant, double white, gave a great flourish of flowers which just finished up (they are always very late but often don't manage to open any flowers). |

| My winners were from a bag of rock garden daffodils. What tiny charmers! All my bulbs came up and did fine because I had no bulb chewers. I caught any varmints before they had a chance, plus I planted all new bulbs with chicken grit (crushed seashells) around them (thanks, oldroser for that tip). Very tall (Dutch??) iris (from bulbs) are just blooming now...what a striking display with the roses! This year I planted bulbs all over the place between perennials and along the path edges. It was a treat to see them in surprise places, esp. the tiny daffs. |
