Bone dry under the skin! Beware July rains!

Looking at my Miss Kim Lilac hedge after the last couple of rains,

they looked stressed and starting to curl up the leaves.

Going into the soil, it was dry dust 1/8" below the surface and down.

They have some mulch still, but basically got nothing from the

last storms.

We laboriously "force fed" water, holding the wand pressed against the

soil next to the trunks until the water began to absorb into the

root ball and surrounding soil, (there are 35 of them) until

every one

was thoroughly moist way down (checked with trowel).

They look a lot happier now.

These were planted last season and have grown and flowered well.

Just thought I'd give alert, in case anyone else is fooled by these

heavy rains that in some areas just wash over, without absorbing

into the ground.

More recent plantings were fine, but some one and two year old

plantings were definitely suffering.
