A week earlier than last year. Pole beans will be ready in a day or two.

Congrats! I haven't gotten to veggies yet, think I will try next year. I'm worried about the deer and haven't had much opportunity to figure out how to deter them.

The first time I tried to grow summer squash, deer ate the young fruits, then the remaining flowers, then the rest of the plant. The good news is in summer, when food is abundant, it doesn't take too serious a fence to keep deer out of the vegetable garden. You can build one requiring little effort or expense. Now that I've enclosed the vegetable garden, deer haven't touched it. Next year I'll have to plant zucchini.

Summer squash gives the biggest return in pounds of veggies per square foot of anything in the garden. The two hills I have will mean enough squash to have it every day for three months but I plan to share with my pooh who thinks that whether sauteed in butter or done with olive oil and garlic, this is really superior dog food.

And zucchini bread is so tasty, and it freezes well! We are starting to get tons of zucchini...faster than we can eat them! Right behind is the yellow, butternut, and spaghetti squash. Can't wait for that first ripe tomato!

Will probably think about a small veggie garden next summer, I hear so many great things about those fresh vegetables. The best I do is a small deck planter on the railing with basil and parsley. Enjoy your food!
