Tomato report

I grew five kinds this year - a total of two dozen plants. Most of them were Supersonic, my favorite main crop. Stupice was giving me ripe tomatoes from July 12th, Supersonic ripened a huge crop starting July 31st, Big Rainbow came along August 8th (not many tomatoes but enormous, solid and sweet - a very decorative yellow with red splashes) and the Opalka just ripened a few days ago - a paste kind with big fruit, excellent flavor and few seeds. The cherry tomatoes didn't amount to much, mostly because Stupice ripened first and tasted a lot better than the cherry kinds so I didn't bother typing up the cherries or giving them more fertilizer.
So far I've picked over 100 pounds of tomatoes and have canned juice, canned whole tomatoes and eaten big tomato salads every day.
All of them are still going strong and I'm hoping for another month of fresh tomatoes. Definitely a worthwhile planting.
How did yours do?

RE: Tomato report

Tomatoes did pretty good, though not spectacular, for me this year. We grew more of the commercial kinds this year since the spring was so busy with building the new sections of garden that I didn't have any time to start seeds. The Sweet 100 Cherry tomatoes did very well and were first to turn red - we got great bunches of salad tomatoes and they were amazingly sweet. The Roma's didn't do as well but we still got a few pounds of sauce out of 4 plants and next time I'll give them more room. Early Girl was just ok - I don't know whether it was the not amending the soil well enough yet or a bit of shade but they didn't do as well as 2 years ago.

All in all, I'm really satisfied with my yields of 2-3 pounds per plant in the new garden soil though I think I can do better with a little more work. Mine are still producing but they're definitely slowing down and I'm pretty glad since I don't can yet and I've given away as many as people will take.

Did anyone get those BIG green catapillers this year? I had several, man they give me the willies! They look like they had little long white bugs on them too.

RE: Tomato report

Those long white bugs are the chrysalis of a wasp that is a parasite on the tomato horn worm. The caterpillar is dead but doesn't yet know it. Never destroy a horn worm with those parasites on it. And yes, they are revolting.
