Wintering Japanese Maples

I have two dwarf japanese maples in clay pots on my porch here in Stuyvesant Falls. I'm not sure what to do as the winter approaches. I can

- put them in the barn and let them go dormant. There is not much light and the temperature gets down to about 40F.

- bring them indoors and treat them like houseplants for the winter.

Any advice?

Thank you.

RE: Wintering Japanese Maples

I don't have mine in pots, but in the ground here in LaGrange, Dutchess County. No problems overwintering..
However, I would worry about your pots freezing and killing the plant, and possibly breaking the pots.

Between the two options you state, I like putting them in the barn where the most light is, and water them sparingly..

Actually, I would bury the pot outside, or at least place it on the ground and put a mound of compost around it to give it about 2 feet of insulation around the pots.

Good luck!!
