Who's going to try winter sowing?

What a great way to get some gardening in during those long, cold winter months and get tons of seedlings to boot! I started last winter and had so many that I couldn't get them all in the ground! I think this year I will try to get organized enough to have a spring plant sale and also have something to trade if we ever have a HV plant swap.

Winter sowing is very easy. All you need is soil, seeds, and a covered container to put them in (and it can be made from something out of the recycle bin). You get the seeds ready, put them outside, forget them for a few months, and once it starts warming up, you get seedlings. Then, just water as needed and transplant.

If anyone is interested, look at the FAQ's on the winter sowing forum. They're a great bunch!

I have been thinking about it very seriously. When is the best time to start and does anyone have any ideas as to the best type of seeds to use?

They have a whole list of seeds suitable in the FAQ's. Last winter I just kind of tried everything, and most came up. I did spring sow Cosmos, though.

Some people start planting at the Winter Solstice, but I didn't begin until the end of January.

The plants really are very hardy.
