Birds need our help now!

This morning (10-12-10), after many nights of freezing weather, I saw a little hummingbird just outside my living room window. He looked like a male Rufous and was looking for food. Poor little guy; he couldn't find any. So I now have one HB feeder out back and one HB feeder out front, each with about 1/2 cup of nectar. Also, there were lots of other birds out front searching for water. So I cleaned and refilled the bird bath and loaded down all my feeders with fresh bird seed. The birds are going to need our help until spring time. All of the food that they depend on during the winter is now dead.

Remember, Rockport is in south Texas, and freezes are unusual for us. The Christmas 2004 6" snow that we had down here in Rockport, Texas (first ever in history) caused for all the plants to freeze and die. So for the remainder of the winter, I was feeding one male Rufous, one female Ruby Throat and two Buff Bellies. Come spring, they flew away.
