Our Winter Hummingbird

Just to say Thank Youto all those who offered us help to keep our winter bird alive. 2 of you helped us identify our Annas female Hummingbird which is not supposed to be here in Spokane WA!!!

So far she is doing well, we have 3 feeders out for her 2 with heat lamps on them and at night we bring in 2 so they do not freeze. Its been a experience as when its REALLY cold we have to bring in 1 feeder to warm up for her every hr. or so and at night we bring in 2. She comes for her last drink about 3:30-4:00 and is back at 7-7:15 every morning....which is a treat for my husband as he was getting up at 6:15am to be sure it was there for her 6:30 arrival but now its not light that early here.

Every morning we sit at the table by the window and view 2 feeders one on our window and the other hanging at edge of deck. She arrives and buzzes the hanging feeder and sips several times then comes and sits for a LONG drink on the window feeder and then for the rest of day she uses one of the 3 all day long. The 3rd feeder is down under deck where its protected from wind and snow/rain and has a heat lamp on it most of the time but she seems to not care as she uses them all.

She sits up in the top of our plum tree (often riding the branches in the wind) and in the lilac bush (its protected some by fence and house and deck)where she can see all her feeders. We have been so lucky Mother Nature has been kind to us so far no below 0 temps and several warm days off and on so we see her catching bugs too.

Hoping we can get her through Jan. and Feb. and then maybe she will go where she should be to raise a family but it will be a sad day when she does not appear! Maybe she will stay in Spokane??
