Beautiful shots, Laura! I am anxiously awaiting hummer season. Last year, my first RT appeared at the feeder on 3/22. It's always so exciting to see the first of the season. It sure would be nice to have them year around as I assume you do. However, I have so many during peak season, they work me to death making nectar and filling the feeders, so I need the winter break!

I've seen Rufous and they were never as brown as that one. I'd have to say it's an Anna.

I've very jealous of you guys in California. You get such a variety. I only see Rufous here once in a while. Mostly we get the Ruby-throats.

The first photo shows an Anna's in flight. They are larger than a Rufous/Allens. Here is a pic of an Allen's and Anna's sharing.

I usually can get 5 or 6 species through out the year. But the Anna's are here year round, Allen's sometimes as well.

I believe the first shot you pose at the top with the pink neck and no brown below is an anna, and the other pics with all the brown are the male rufous. Following I have link which shows a male rufous which looks exactly like the pics you have. The females are much more drab.

I have an Allens that has stayed in my yard for the last 4 summers. He arrived About a week so ago. Your picture looks more like a Rufous to me especially since it doesn't seem to have much green on it. The Allens has a very green back which extends to the sides slightly while the Rufous has brown sides with only a small amout of green on it's back.

You CA people are all so lucky to the variety of hummers . Can you imagine what us in the east would do if we saw just one Rufous. You would most likely need to call the authorities to calm us down.
