I hear your frustration. The only way I can think to minimize the loss of overwintering critters is to place all of the twigs that I collect on my wood pile. At least then they aren't locked in a plastic bag. Even if they don't survive to fly free, at least they're available as a meal for someone else.

I too am in indy and Im guessing common sense is the best teacher. I usually clear out all known debris once it warms for good usually may. I try to refrain from any major weeding for a week or two and if I do its just clearing out what I know for sure is just weed. Thats about all I can offer , good luck.
