Hummingbirds in Melbourne

I am new to Melbourne Florida and I would like to attract hummingbirds to my back yard. In Maryland, where I used to live, I had no problems. I have only seen one(1) hummingbird so far - stopping at a flower in my neighbor's front yard. From other post I know hummingbirds have been seen south, north, and west of Melbourne. Does anyone know if the Melbourne/Viera area is know for hummingbirds? With the Zoo next to me and the Viera Wetlands five miles away -is it realistic to expect hummingbirds to pick my yard - even if I plant for hummingbirds?

The short answer is yes. The wetlands and the zoo should attract hummingbirds to your general location; now it's up to you to bring them to your yard.

There are many hummingbird plants for your area. If you have a fence or a trellis the best would be the coral honeysuckle, in my opinion. It's in bloom now, but there are many others that will be blooming in the summer. Another sure fire plant for your area is the firebush or hamelia patens. I put a link to it below. You should check out Floridata if you are new to Florida.

By the way, I live in Clermont, just west of Orlando and my brother lives near you in Satellite Beach.

Good luck. As we say here, plant em and you will eventually get em.

Here is a link that might be useful: Firebush
