Hummingbird Garden

Help: Regular Birds taking over feeder

I have a "standard" hummingbird feeder with a perch and lately it has been taken over my small birds and a wood pecker. It seems that they can get their beaks into small holes on the feeder. When the woodpecker lands, he normally sloshes the nectar onto our porch. I haven't seem as many hummingbirds likely because of this.

Any ideas?

I have Black capped chicadees that chase my hummers away from the feeders especially my test tube feeders. I do have the occasional woodpecker come to the feeder but not as often as others do. I finally hung a small bowl feeder with the lid removed with very weak sugar water solution for the chicadees and they are very happy and for the most part they leave the hummers alone. Last year I actually had a chicadee and a hummer on a double test tube feeder together. It was a very cute site. You might want to invest in a few more feeders.

I to have other birds at the humming bird feeders. And now I have more finches than hummers.
I think I'll try Penny's idea and provide a separate supply of nectar for the finches that's easier for them to drink from.
