Hummingbird Garden

I want to try feeding hummingbirds this year. I have 1 feeder(I might buy more) and mixture. Now I just need to find a place and when to put it out.

So a few questions. There are a few places I have in mind-three second story windows but I have cats will the cats scare the birds away? Is it ok to be on the second floor? Another place is my porch but I have wind chimes on my porch and it is right next to the road and side walk- I live in town. Would that be an ok place? I have two other places but they are in the gardens and I would never be able to really see the birds.

Does anyone know when they arrive in Houlton Maine(Aroostook County or also known as "THE" County)

Total first timer with hummingbirds my dad had them when I was a kid but that's it. I feed song birds. Also all the plants I planted in my big garden are for hummingbirds and butterflies. I also have a cement birdbath.

tips would be great

Hi alyciaadamo,

Your second story windows will be OK, as long as the cats can't get to the feeder. If the cats move around inside the windows, the hummers may fly off, but they'll come right back.

Your porch will be great; it'll protect the nectar from sun and rain, and also give the hummers a dry place to perch/feed during storms. The wind chimes will not bother them, and foot traffic may scare them away for a few seconds, but again, they'll be right back.

Your garden is probably the best place for the hummers, but not for you. I would buy another feeder (the small First Nature feeders sold at Wal Mart are less than 5 bucks), and put one on the porch and one in the garden.
