I'm in Roslyn. We managed to attract one for about a week at the end of last summer/early fall. That was the first time we ever had a hummingbird visit.

We have some roses in the front yard but no real flowers in the back except some red cockscomb plants growing under the feeder. I guess it's true that hummingbirds are attracted to red. The cockscomb was the only thing we did different last year.

Also, I do know that we we were using red food dye in the nectar. The hummer never returned when we refilled the feeder with clear nectar.

I think you just have to keep the feeder out there with fresh nectar and grow red flowers to get your best shot.

I saw a hummer for the first time this morning in my garden. As I was watering the flowers a hummer with a red head descended to take a sip from my cardinal vine/cypress vine flowers. It was a magnificent sight. Later in the day I saw an all grey hummer buzzing around the same flowers.

I live in Roslyn as well and I put out a feeder with clear nectar every year. I get so many “customers” at our feeder, occasionally two at once! The reason the other person stopped seeing the hummingbirds was probably because it was the time of their migration, which is earlier than you would think (late August). The dye is really not good for them and they will come without it. Be patient, because It can take a few days for the news to get out that you have yummy nectar! Hope that this is helpful.
