Hummingbird Garden

black-ringed hummingbird?

Hi,

I live in Southern California. Today, I saw a very unusual bird, which I think is some kind of hummingbird. I looked it up in my bird book, but could not find anything like it.

It appeared to be shorter and fatter that the common varieties I see. But most unusual, it had black rings around its body. It was sucking necter with a typical-looking hummingbird beak. Any ideas about what it could be?

It sounds like a hummingbird moth.

I was thinking this might be a moth too. Google images for sphynx moth and for hummingbird moth and see if that looks like your striped visitor.
