What kind of spray companies are you talking about?

We bought a mosquito magnet. Works wonderfully for us.
No chemicals that kill.. only bait that attracts them, they get trapped and die.

If anything it keeps the mosquitoes concentrated in that area and the hummers can pick them off more easily. :)

Mosquito magnet does work on asian tiger mosquitoes. You have to use the correct bait. We use 2 different kinds in ours.

I can't say we are mosquito free, but pretty darn close.

I also try to keep standing water dumped. Can't say the neighbors do. :( We keep our trees and shrubs limbed up so there's good air circulation and more light gets into the shaded areas where mosquitoes tend to hang out. It made a huge difference in both places we've lived and done this.

I noticed last fall that one of our gutters didn't have enough slope to it and there were spots that held water. When the gutters were replaced after a bad tornado came through I made sure they checked to make sure the gutters would empty. During the summer its not so much an issue because it evaporates pretty fast, but spring and fall it could be a breading ground.

beanie, there is no truth to that claim unless they are simply treating bodies of water with larvacide. That chemical is harmless to other.

However, the primary chemical used is a pyrethrin (or pyrethrum) based pesticide. This family of insecticides is a broad spectrum killer of any insects (good or bad), and is hazardous to fish, amphibians, earthworms, pets, other wildlife...and humans who are exposed to it often. Children, pregnant women, the elderly, and anyone with a compromised immune system should steer clear.
