Well. my congratulations to you - I cannot seem to start anything successfully from seed so I bought a couple from the greenhouse! Glad to hear that they really are a hummer favourite. Great pictures as well.

mbrowne, terrific pictures. Chickadees and cardinals love the seed, too. Don't know if you have those birds there, but seedeating birds will like the seed, I'm sure.

shilla, try soaking the seed in water for 2 days before planting. That shortens the sprouting time so it reduces the chances of bad things happening to them. They need warmth, so be sure to wait til you have nights above 50 to plant. Don't plant too deep.

Please, tell more about cardinal climber? It sounds like a very easy,light weight vine. I just planted a trumpet vine in a whiskey barrel with a very large trellis. I guess I didn't do my research very well! Now I'm not sure what to do.

Donna, trumpet vine gets very big and heavy. It often grows wild here in MO.

Cardinal vine, as you see in the pictures has lacy foliage, very pretty. It's an annual here, everywhere except zone 9 I would guess. So it can't get that huge in one season before frost cuts it down. One year I grew one it got maybe 20 feet high, but then the frosts came.

Cardinals and chickadees do love the seed, so it's wonderful from that point of view.

Hey Donna, what is the problem with your trumpet vine. I think there are many different trumpet vines. I have one called a trumpet creeper, campsis radicans, which is pretty awesome. I got it last fall and never got around to planting it so it is rootbound in its nursery container, but just started to put out many blooms. The cardinal climber is nice and light and quick to flower. I gave one to a friend still in a 16-oz plastic glass and it was flowering already. It should do fine in a container. The blooms close toward the evening.

Right now I have 3 buddleia and the cardinal climber blooming. There is no contest - they are always at the cardinal climber. This was going on this AM during my morning coffee:

I've got several placed here and there. Some on the back deck to grow up a trellis. Even have one planted at the base of a Chaste Tree (Vitex) hoping it will take off there as well.
