penstemons run amuck! should I prune now?

Hi there, I've got several varieties of penstemon that are 2 years old now, and they've got lots of new growth coming up, but they're also very leggy from the last couple years. Should I prune them back hard to the new growth now? Thanks,

Short answer--yes.

Long answer--be conservative. Shape them up now with the notion that you will revisit this in 2-3 weeks.

I'm basing this on what the weatherman has to say in my area.
