Perhaps there was a wasp or ants on the feeder?

When there are plenty of flowers blooming nearby, my hummers tend to ignore my feeders, too. I would keep the hummsicle, and maybe put out another feeder with a different design, and see how much they are used throughout the year. I'm sure it will get used more later in the season, once young-of-year are around, and others are tanking up in prep for migration.

In my area of the mid-west early hummers mostly go to feeders , but may go to honeysuckle if in bloom and salvia black and blue in bloom other than that its feeders for now.

But yes if ants have found your feeder you may need to rig up an ant moat for your feeder.

I've checked my feeder, and found no ants. I've since switched to a Perky Pet feeder. Hoping to see better results. Maybe I should move it to a different location?

Don't buy an expensive feeder unless it is more pleasing to you.I just use the old inexpensive feeders and they work just fine.I just use the 4:1 H20/Sugar formula and they love it.Yours may have just been checking it out and might be using it when you don't know.I don't know where you live but if there are plenty of flowers out they might not use it but mine in Northern NH use the feeders and flowers.

1 make sure feeder is free from pests like ants,wasps,bees,squirrels yes squirels

2 make sure your nectar water is 4 parts water and 1 part sugar

3 the tree seems an odd place for a feeder as pests can easily reach nectar. hang on a shepards hook

4 add a few flowers that look nice in hanging baskets and attract hummingbirds

5 make sure feeder location is placed away from traffic and other disturbances that can harm or scare hummingbirds
