Saw my first hummer of the season today

Is it a bird?Is it a bee? Ohhh it's super hummer!!!First I heard the buzz and as usual thought bee?Next thing it swooped down and took a sip from the feeder that I put up last week.So then I had to go in and make fresh nectar and refill that one plus put up my other one.Only thing in my yard in bloom now are apple blossoms.Azalea has buds but not open yet.Daffodils of course.The wild honeysuckle hasn't blossomed yet but today was sooo nice that I took all my houseplants out plus the veggie starters and myself just to catch some rays.I'll probably do the in and out thing for a few weeks yet.I need to go buy a fuschia for the hummer also.So if you live in Northern NH put your hummer feeders out!

Lucky you!!! I finally saw one way down here in NC on the 4th. He came back for seconds, and I haven't see him since. Good sign though!! They should be back soon :) Christy

Think I have at least 6-8 now.Some small males and think a few females and one larger male that is a real showoff and kind of a bully.He buzzes louder then the rest and likes to buzz right in front of you with wings outspread and red throat showing.He spent most of today chasing after the others to get them away from the feeders right over my head while I was potting up some flowers.Guess I'll put another feeder out back.Tried to watch the video of the nest but only got sound and a black screen.

Congrats on your first and early hummers. Its always nice to hear the humm of their wings again. Action has been rather spotty here. Just when I thought maybe some regulars had kicked in they seem to have vanished but it is still early in may. It seems it takes to the latter part of may to get some established here. From then on it seems to pick up steam hummerwise.

I kinda think my bully hummer was one I had last year-I remember one that buzzed right in front of my face then.They are very interesting birds and all seem to have different personalities.One small male actually chirps while he is feeding-I never knew that hummers chirp.Then there is Miss pensive who likes to alight and just look around.Never saw one stay still that long.Maybe she is surveying for a nesting area?
