mbuckmaster, I may have thought I was looking at a ruby and actually checking out a rufous. I never even gave it a thought. I'm thinking, if it doesn't have the ruby throat, it has to be a female. Boy am I not good at this, lol. But I do have a hummingbird !!!

I believe in WA we get Anna's, Black-chinned, Calliope and Rufous, and I have seen all 4 species, and all but the Anna's in my yard.

Those western birds that end up in the east during the winter are vagrants and some species were only banded and recorded once. Rufous are the most common of the species that tend to end up in your neck of the woods. I believe that Bob Sargent did band a Green Breasted Mango there this past winter and a green breasted Mango was reported and captured in Wisconsin this past winter. I know of at least 2 occasions where a calliope was banded in PA. There have been a few Rufous in NY and north of me in Ontario Canada. These vagrants are rare but they do actually occur from time to time during the winter.

Yes, I didn't doubt the veracity of the list; I was just wondering if anyone had seen any of these uncommon visitors in their state. I'll have an eye out for that mango!

I have only seen a rufous up here and that was about 12 miles from my house in Ontario, Canada.
