Last year we decided to rip out our side yard as it never grew right anyway. I found out on this forum about a great Native California Plant nursery, geesh now the name escapes me. It is on Ortega Hwy in San Juan Capistrano. Anyway we went and purchased about 10 plants back in September. Then we had the wildfires here, we had a Saturday off from Marching Band and dug up the grass and planted. Here is what it looks like today.

I have a couple of different sage and salvia. The hummingbirds love it. Now that they are established I try to only water once a week. Although with the rain we had last Thursday that won't be a problem.
