Head to the store buy a hummingbird attracting plant and put in front of hummingbird feeder. Let feeders get empty as you are gone and the hummers will have a nice plant to feed from.

I'd fill as much as I can & let it run out while I'm gone if it was me. And fret a bit while I was away lol.

Wait, did you say you feed HUNDREDS of hummers???? I'm feeling some hummer envy here. I bet you go through a lot of sugar, but I wish I could sit back & watch that many hummers in my yard. Enjoy your vacation!

Thanks for your suggestions. I'm afraid it would take dozens of plants to substitute for the current feeding.

Yes, I did say hundreds. In the height of the summer we use probably 25 to 50 pounds of sugar per week. Winter time much less as we have only about a dozen over-winter hummers.

Last year we just let them run dry. On our return it took about two weeks before the bulk of the population returned. Don't know what they did in the interim.
