I have never heard of anyone advising people to paint their roof red. I amn afraid if I told my husband that I wanted to have the roof painted red, he would have me committed. He already things that I am a loose nut.

Tieing some red ribbons around your yard or property might be more attracting as they would wave and would seemingly attract more attention. But to each his/her own.

Penny, not your roof, the top of the fireplace which is not visable to anyone unless you are flying overhead. As I recall tieing something red to high places was also suggested. But this was easy for me as well I wouldn't have to see any red ribbons flying in the wind.

Since the color red attracts the hummers and they tend to investigate the red objects. I would be reluctant to color my chimney cap red for fear the hummers might get inside the chimney, or be exposed to carbon monoxide that is being vented from my chimney. I would add some extra red to my yard before I would put any on my roof,

A good point chinamygarden, but I do have a safe closing on the cap and I don't know how carbon monoxide could a problem? I have never even used my fireplace (and if I ever do it would be in Jan-Feb). I don't remember where I read this about using red as high a you can put it- in the spring especially. I don't want to climb a tree to tie something red to the top and them have to replace it when something happens to it. Painting was just easier for me. Will let all know results next spring.

I found cheap bright red and bright orange frisbies at a discount store. I poked holes in the centers of each then slipped them over the hanging wires of my gravity feeders. It looks strange, but I think it helped in the spring. (I've taken them off since then, they just need to be repainted for next year)

In many homes the hot water heater is vented via the chimney. Thats how CO can get in there.

I didn't know that some homes vent that way. My hot water heater has it's own and it is not very close to my chimney.
