Low hummer activity

danty

I wanted to get some input on the hummer situation here at my place in So-Cal.

For the past couple of summers the bird activity at the feeders has gone down sharply.

I mixed the solution as usual (a blend of Perky Pet and Hummingbird Favorite) and kept the feeders clean.

But, unlike the first year -- when there were "clouds" of hummers around each feeder, there began to be 3, then 2, then only 1 at each of the two feeders I have.

Now, we did re-landscape the backyard which was not really grown in until this year.

But the canyon we adjoin has lots of local growth and all the neighbors have many hummer-favored plants including abundant natives.

This year I have tried a straight solution of sugar and water which, again, has attracted just one hummer per feeder -- with the usual fighting off of other birds.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Dan
