Hi - This is my first year putting feeders up as I really didn't believe we could attract hummingbirds into our yard until one came right up to me in the yard to look at my bright blue earrings. :) I have been a little obsessed with them, ever since I visited my parents in Mesa, Arizona; they have a steady stream of hummingbirds all day and I just loved watching them. So I hung up two feeders and also hung a planter box of brightly colors flowers and within a couple of days, I had 3-4 different hummingbirds visiting my house all day long. I was so amazed. I am in Washington state and our lot is very shady, but they came anyway! They particularly like one feeder that is red and has the perches. The other is purple with no perches and they only go to it as a last resort. I have had 2 males and 2 females (all Rufous's I believe) and they would chase each other away constantly. In almost the entire month of June, I barely saw the feeder without a hummingbird on it, but now I barely see one on it at all. Not sure if this is typical or not - I keep changing the solution to see if maybe I did something wrong, but they are still barely coming around. And the flowers in the basket are still in full bloom! I miss my birds!

This is just my second year attracting Hummingbirds. I am not sure how many we have. I get more sightings at dawn and dusk but usually see only one at a time. I have three feeders. I mark the outside of my feeders and have noticed that they drink a half inch of nector from all three daily. So I am guessing I have several...all Ruby Throated.

That's very interesting mizruzz-- it's actually quite a lot of drinking!. I think I will try marking mine when I fill them tomorrow. Thanks for the tip.
