Just curious as I'll be heading for my winter home in Florida..

Since I've been back home in Pa I only saw one.. We must have had bad weather as they by passed my area completely..

Should I put out a feeder for when I return to Florida.. I had such a wonderful time enjoying them from March till when I headed back north early May..and I was so looking forward to it too.

I've enjoyed all your postings though..loved the pictures as well.. aaaaaaah now to soon maybe see some for myself would be a joy..

thanks for you input

God Bless

BarbZeee,

Anything is possible. Visit the floridahummingbirds.net forum to find out where they're being seen. I've provided a link to the forum below.

Hummingbirds may be found throughout the state during the winter. You just need to offer what they want and be lucky enough to be where they are. Not every neighborhood/habitat will support them.

If you are south of Kisseemme or Osceola County you have a chance of seeing Rubythroateds if you have the plants for them. North of Osceola we get some Rufous and some people also get some blackchinned.

I'm West of Orlando and the rubythroateds are pretty much gone by early October, but I got some Rufous in November last year and they stayed until late spring when the RT arrived again.

Good luck.

I don't know about October but I have had one around for a couple weeks now. Just now seeing it like three days in a row. Its loving my White Cat Whiskers, Red Shrimp plant, and Black and Blue Salvia. I have lots of other plants but they are on the side of my house where I can't see them from inside. My guess is that its visiting my Firebush and maybe the Dwarf Powderpuff as well. I know my butterflies love them.

Thinking I have a female or immature male. No real color but on the back. I'm in Lakeland.

Hey, Mary, glad to see that you have a hummer. I have just one hanging around now. It's a little lonely, but I have hopes of attracting more soon.

The butterflies are all over, though. How about you?

Hi Tom,
It started out as a very slow season for butters but gradually got better. Am raising my second large brood of Eastern Blacks, have had tons of Polydamas on the vine (not much new growth now), lots of Gulf Frits, too. Quite a few Spicebush and Giant Swallowtails right now being raised. Just got my first three clusters of Zebra Longwing eggs. Had only seen a single ZLW before but never got eggs from it. Hoping I don't have any problems with Black Death from these. I think I will keep them in very small groups just in case.

This hummer doesn't seem to want the feeder. Guess there are lots of flowers available now. I have been surprised at the success of the Red Shrimp, Salvias, and Cat Whiskers for the butterflies this year. Maybe it is because I don't have as many Zinnias and Tithonias.

BTW, I have had a Poly that loves to nectar from the feeder. Only one so I think its the same one. Will try to load pictures if I get a good one of the hummer.

Flordia GWers, what's your season like? Here in Houston, hurricane season pretty matches up with hummingbird season; I'm curious if this is true for you, also (coincidence, I know, they're just both active in the hot months).

Lauralily,
This is the earliest I have ever had hummers. Last Jan. one showed up and stayed till Mar, feeding all day long. At times I would see a 2nd but "Hummie" would chase others away.

I am now seeing two - a male and I think the same one I posted about above - a female I hope. At first it would not come to the feeder but now I do see it pretty often. I don't know if the male is the same one as last winter but he doesn't seem to mind the other one being around - that's why I think it may be a female. Usually I will see one then a few minutes later the other will show up. If you go to the Florida forum, I have a posting called Birds in my yard - its on the 2nd or 3rd page now. Posted pictures of the hummers. I hate to double post.

Am hoping for a long season. Have lots of plants so if we don't get hurt by hurricanes, maybe these two will stay put.

Ist time zinnia grower here. I have a few dozen 2" tall Oklahoma Mix Zinnia seedlings. Should I plant them in the sand where I plan on growing them or transplant to a larger pot like I do with tomatos & bell peppers and let them get bigger?
