Is it a Hummingbird? Do you have binoculars that you can get a closer look? Is the nest close enough for you to reach it.
Any baby bird hanging upside down for an extended period of time would be in danger.

Although it is not within reach without a ladder, it clearly is a hummingbird. My DH took a ladder out this morning and tried to place it back in the nest. We are not sure if it is completely untangled, but after a few minutes of laying still (scaring us greatly), it is sitting upright in the nest, and Mom has been by to feed it several times. We will continue to keep a close eye on the situation. Thanks for your reply!

I hope your baby hummer made a successful departure by now. If so, look around and if you hear chirping from a tree near the nest, that the baby calling its mother. FYI, there is an amazing DVD about baby hummingbirds called, "First Flight: A Mother Hummingbird's Story" You can watch whole sequence of events in beautiful close ups.
