Finally -- lots of hummers

I just can't believe how many hummers I have right now in my garden. This morning I counted about 15 and it was a site to see. A lot of chasing each other around and not much going on at the feeders but they would perch on my power line and watch everything that was happening.

Also, they are finally enjoying the flowers I planted. Their doesn't seem to be as much fighting when they are in the flowers.

Last night I sat outside for about two hours and watched them gobble up the mosquitos and try to enjoy the feeders.

One problem is they all like the same feeder. My cheapo Wal-Mart feeder. A few go to the Hummzinger Ultra and even fewer to the fancy fuscia.

Today I'm going to check out Wal-Mart and see if they have another feeder and try and place it in by the black and blue salvia which they just can't get enough of.

Glad to hear you are now having great success , enjoy it while it lasts. I too enjoy watching them gobble up mosquitoes and knats while still maintaining vigil on the flowers and feeders. Seem to be experiencing a hummer lull here. They are not emptying the large feeders like they were in two days time. Im not sure if the big wave has passed or if its still to come, time will tell.

havn't noticed them eating insects. do they take them from the air like dragonflies?

Yes they do snatch them from the air very much like a flycatcher. I so enjoy watching them do this!

I know that here in Delaware my season is winding down--some of the adult males have already left. I really hate to see the season end. And there is some real sadness as I realize some of them won't make it back here next year.

I wonder if migration has started for any of you in other places?

Nice, Monica. I peaked at four hummers on August 1st, but today I had no hummers for the first time in three weeks. I'm really hoping there will be another small surge passing over my house in the next week.

Congrats Monica!

I have a few hummers and I am greatful for the two or three that I have. Though it would be nice to see a bunch at the same time!
