Hummers hanging around

My hummers are hanging out near the feeders all day now. They are perched on branches for a long time. My grandson, 9 years old, is spending some time with us,and he is learning about the hummers and enjoying watching them thru the binoculars. He has learned to identify them and has given some names, like Sugar, Joe, Hope. We have identified a juvie today. He sits near "his" feeder and chases others away. I was able to sit in my rocker today,holding a feeder in my hand, and a hummer finally came and sipped. What a thrill to watch him up close. We are taking pictures, but they are not good enough to post.

Hey Nana. Sounds like you and your grand son are having great fun.

I would never have the patience to sit and hold a feeder for the hummers to come to. But if I stand still on my balcony sometimes they buzz around my head going to the feeders close by. They chirp as if to say "Will you move out of the way!"

Once a hummer buzzes near your head, he is ready to sip from a feeder in your hand! It is awesome to watch this activity so close-up. Now, if only I could talk my husband into taking my picture. Some friends are doubtful when I tell them a hummer comes to feed from my hand. . . I need proof! Of course, I enjoy the pictures on the internet of hummers feeding from a person's hand. Driving my grand son home to Shreveport, LA this morning. We will miss our hummers this week. I return to Baton Rouge Aug. 18th. I sure hope the hummers will still be hanging around.

Your hummers will be there waiting for you. I know you have provided a good home for them for years. They won't forget where Nana's place is.

I'm in BR too. Hummer activity is on the increase as migration begins. Heard the first report of the season of a Rufous in Thibodeaux.

I am back home from Shreveport. And the hummers are still hanging around, with more friends joining them. I asked my husband to keep the feeders filled and sweet husband kept his promise. He has never filled a feeder before! That was my 47th anniversary present, and what a pleasant surprise to see so many hummers at the feeders. I would be so happy to spot a Rufous. I only have RT. Oh well, I am very thankful for the beautiful hummers hanging around!

We are very close to Shreveport, and there has been alot of hummer activity the last week or so. It is just so hot !! The rain always seems to miss us. I have been filling the feeders more often, and trying to keep the plants alive. ~ Judy
