Best Container Hummingbird Plant - Turk's Cap

I have been growing Turk's Cap (malvaciscus arboreus) in a container on my Connecticut patio for the past three years. I ordered a small plant online (can't remember from where) and trained it to grow as a standard. Turks Cap is very vigorous, overwinters indoors easily, and the hummingbirds absolutely love its many nector filled blooms. I believe Turks Cap is native to the Gulf Coast and Mexico, so hummers seem to recognize the bright red flowers instinctively. This plant is a must have for hummingbird fans!

That was a great idea to train it! Yup, much loved!

Very pretty - It's a Texas native and I have several in my Ft. Worth hummingbird/butterfly garden. For those of you who live in the South or Southwest, it's one of the few natives that will flower in part shade down here...very useful! It's also sold at the big box retailers here, which is great because more people will get to know this hardy native plant.

Up north in CT, mine gets only an hour of sun per day and blooms profusely. Shade tolerance also makes this an easy plant to care for indoors -- just cut it back to make it neat and place near a window.
