Hi hostagrams. I am in SW Lower Michigan. We have 3 feeders a short distance apart. Only have one tree so 2 are on limbs and
one hangs from the awning. We still have 5 Hummers around..they
fight and chase around like mad. One is the resident BOSS and dive bombs the others. I was just out there and he went to
dive bomb a hummer and almost hit me.. I was too startled to laugh :) the thing is they sit side by side on the neighbors
TV antenna.. but let one of them go near the feeders and they
are toast!

In my front yard I have 9 feeders spread out over my yard and there is plenty of domination, but in my back yard I have just one large feeder, but last night for some reason they were swarming that feeder and they tried to be territorial but there was just too many of them as evident on my photos on ctnchpr 's post of the census this morning. So the secret seems to be in the quantity , once you are able to accumulate enough birds they just give up and feed. Sorry for the bad pics I posted there, but you can see what Im saying.

There's a certain "critical mass" of hummers necessary to have multiple birds feed at once. If there's only a few around, the resident bully can watch & chase them off one at a time but at some point, there's too many for this tactic to be effective -- others sneak in while he's chasing the first. At that point, he gives up to conserve energy.

My resident hummers also seem less territorial and aggressive during the cooler months (Oct/Nov/Dec), then breeding season starts and the hormones start up again.

I thought the same thing, but now as we get migraters...
