I observed white stuff on the beaks of some of my hummers a couple years ago. I emailed my local bird lady and she said it was nectar from where they had been sticking their beaks into flowers. As to one running into you .... I've often had chills when they zoom past me so very close and often wondered if there had been instances where they actually ran into someone. Sounds as though he got the wind knocked out of him and had to lay there for a moment to catch his breath.

Just the other day I captured a shot of one of my migrators with a beak full of dust. She was hitting the salvia and Orange Noah morning glory. After a few passes at the buddleia it was pretty much gone.

Have you seen this hummer since the initial sighting? Hopefully it was just in a little state of shock and fully recovered...

No doubt it is pollen I see it all the time during the season. Hummers can sure get carried away in defense of their territory. I hope that hummer is ok. I have had them stop just short of hitting me in some of their aerial battles.

Thanks everyone for the pollen tip. I still am amazed after years of watching hummers that one actually flew into me. I think he must have been extremely tired from his migration flight. He was the last hummer I saw at my feeder this year and he was a very late sighting. Beautiful pictures Tracey!
