Never saw that before...

After watching hummer's in my garden for fiftenn years, I saw a first today... three times.
Had never seen hummer's perch together.
Had never seen hummer's "dog fight" to the ground.
Had never seen one one hummer pin the other to the ground for a full three seconds... to win "THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP of HUMMER WRESTLING"

The two hummer's were perched for several minutes in a bush next to the feeder. I thought they were protecting each other, as the bush is fairly low to the ground. Then some low level dog fighting and they went to the ground for a second, then perched together in the bush again. After a minute, BOOM the dog fight was back on. This time when they went to the ground they actually were wrestling for a few seconds. It ended when one pinned the other's back to the ground by standing on it. The winner got the perch above the feeder, the loser left in a big huury.

Will have my camera ready tomarrow, as this happened right outside my window, 10-15 feet away.

Rick

Wow... that's cool. I wonder what they were wrestling about? I thought it was too early for breeding season but I guess I've read that it can include Dec so maybe, huh? The Annas in my yard chase each other around but are quite calm by comparison.

I've seen this only in broad-tailed hummers, and some of the fights I've seen lasted more than 10 seconds, I would guess.
