I will leave the gardening question to someone with more plant knowledge. But I will say that the Hummers will not become dependant upon you to the point where they will die if you do not put out your feeders. Studies have shown that hummers get at most 25% of there food from feeders. That means that if the feeder goes away, they have other sources that they can eat from. People think that because they are so small they are fragile, but hummingbirds travel thousands of miles each year in migration. They can and will travel within your area to find other souces of food. Have no fear and put out those feeders, you will enjoy the show.

Two plants that are on most lists of hummer magnets are 'Lady in Red' Salvia and 'Black & Blue' Salvia. Easy to grow, long bloom period. Cannas and Nasturtiums are also good.

If you want to go Native, Cardinal Flower (Lobelia cardinalis) is a sure bet. Very versatile, can be grown in beds, containers, bogs, or along the edges of streams and ponds. It does best with some sun, but will be OK in full shade. The RT Hummingbird is its primary pollinator.

You might also want to post this question on the Florida Forum here at GardenWeb. There are several members who live in your area and might be able to give you very specific recommendations, although all the plants mentioned above will be great on the east coast of Florida.

If you can plant something that will grow into a small shrub then try firebush (hamelia patens). The hummers here love it and visit daily during most of the year. Porterweed attracts them too, as do both colors of firespike (purple and red).

Hummingbirds are tricky in Florida. They migrate through the state in early spring and late fall, but they don't stick around in large groups. You may have a couple pair throughout the summer but not dozens like most of us were used to seeing when we lived up north. Occassionally one or two birds will stay through the entire year but I haven't seen any since early November. They should start passing through again in early February, so your timing is good! Get those plants out soon!
