Will apricot (Prunus armeniaca) and sand cherry (eastern - P. pumila; western - P. besseyi) form a natural hybrid if bloom periods are identical (New Jersey)?

Burbank formed a controlled experiment of such and produced a plumcot, but I don't know if it only involved bagging flowers - that it could perhaps also occur in a natural orchard surrounded by local populations of sand cherry (plum).
