Hi im new to hybridizing and was thinking about doing pansies for my first experiments. Is there anyone around that has experience with these plants as to how easy they are to breed? Any and all help/tips/sugestions welcome

RE: Pansy hybridization help please?

I lost the whole message, when I tried the link out in the preview. But to repeat in short; remove sepals, petals and anthers from pod parent flowerbuds, two days before they would open. Wait two days and then tap/squeeze pollen out of freshly opened pollen parent flowers (a small mirror works well to collect it on). Apply this pollen to the stigmatic lips of the prepared flowers. You'll find this lip at the bottom of the opening into the hollow globe-shaped stigma (opposite from the stem end of the pod). If you repeat this step, over several days, chance of seed set will be improved. You can skip the pod parent prep stage, if you aren't bothered by some self-pollinated seeds mixed in with the hybrid ones. In this case, you can just rip the lower petal off of a freshly opened pod-parent flower. Then apply pollen to the exposed stigmatic lip. Good luck, and be sure to let us know of your results.
