| I have received from GRIN Corvallis Oregon 5 scions
Of the pear-mountain ash hybrid. I have rootone from Rodale A rooting hormone. one scion was powdered up and planted Then I realized I needed to cut the bottom of the scion and then dip in powder. I did this to the second scion. I have three left not Planted yet. What would you do? I have the two planted in paper Orange juice containers with the plastic spout. with potting soil. They are in a window with mostly shade. steve |

| Steve, Your scions are unlikely to root, they were meant to be used to graft onto appropriate rootstocks. I've seen the 'Sorbopyrus' offered by a number of nurseries - OneGreenWorld, Mellingers, and others. My understanding, from seasoned orchardists is that they're mainly just a curiosity - not very productive, and the quality of the fruit is nothing to get excited about. |

| All the nurseries seem to carry is 'Shipova'. Has anybody seen any other X Sorbopyrus hybrids out there for sale? Not that I really feel the need to plant a vast array of sorbopyrus, just curious. |

| I found some more info on intergeneric fruit hybrids. The following link has descriptions and pictures of several. http://www.ars-grin.gov/cor/presentations/Deviant Fruits_files/frame .html Pyrus, Malus, Cydonia, Aronia, Cotoneaster, Amelanchier, Mespilus have been crossed in various ways with varying results. x Sorbocotoneaster pozdnjakovii Pojark. x Pyronia veitchii (Trabut) Guill. Cydonia oblongua Miller x Pyrus communis L. Sorbaronia hybrida (hybrid of moutain-ash and chokeberry, cultivated) Sorbaronia dippelii (Sorbus aria X Aronia melanocarpa) NC State's Mountain Horticultural Crops Research and Extension Center also lists some. Now, if someone would try bring the loquat (Eriobotrya japonica) into the mix, we might have something really interesting. Karl |
