Exotic Rubus Hybrids

| Hello,
I hope this isn't too similar to the discussions regarding blackberry and raspberry hybrids but I am interested in more exotic rubus. I love such species as neigoon(R.Arcticus) and cloudberryR.chamaemorus)and better yet would like to cross them if possible. Does anyone have any exprience with crossing unconventional Rubus species and if so how successful were they?

| I don't have an experience in crossing them, but my feeling is go for it. They both grow in similar conditions in a similar environment. Just make sure you can provide the right growing conditions, because both plants are from the North and grow in humid soil. I wouldn't recommend culling plants until they are mature, because I have no idea if gender will be inherited in the F1 plants. If you do the cross, please let us know what happens. I can't wait to hear! |

| Well I am a novice at best at this so, is there a basic tutorial anywhere online on how to cross rubus species? What kind of equipment would I need?I would like to go as low tech as possible. |

| I know there are 2 berries hardy to zone one . Are these the ones you are refering to ? My question is where can I get some ? you can read Carol Deppe's bok on plant breeding. Kent Whealy's book on seed saving would give you a source for bags to keep unwanted pollen out . You would need a kamal hair brush available at the art department in most large dept stores. you may need a small pill bottle and some alcohol to sterilize the brush between crosssings. and some tags and a small notebook to record your crosses .Do not depend on memory for that . |

I have a lot of Korean Wineberry and also some fall raspberries, but so far they do not seem to hybridize naturally. I would like to get them to cross and the chromosome # is the same. I too would like to cross different wild raspberry spp. to developed hybrid rubus. I belive that things like Tayberry and Kotata berry and Sylvan, are similar chromosome #, but raspberries are usually diploid. |
