Hybridizing Hibiscus???

Posted by broadax 7 (My Page) on

I currently have a white/red centered Hibiscus and a Red version. Both are flowering and I'd love to cross these to see what happens.
Does it matter which Hibiscus the pollen comes from to get, say, a pink color? Or will I need to cross both each way?

Anyone with experience with doing this on Hibiscus?

Thanks

When in doubt, cross both ways.
I don't know if red x white will give pink. In some plants red is completely dominant over white, in others the pink will come from red x white. It could be that the color pink is due to some dilution factor other than a single dose of red.
I'm sure that this cross has been made repeatedly and the results published. But I haven't read about it.
