thorny rose roots

i thought i would post this as it might be interesting and maybee someone could explain it. i have a rose that sported from indica major into a plant witch 99% thornless and the leaves are different and thought it could be a good rootstock as it would be easier to bud. i moved recently and dug them all out and moved them. when i went back for some other plants some time later i found that they were growing from the roots and they were the same as major indica. so this means that the plant with no thorns i thought would be good as a rootstock for that reason when budded to another variety would accually have major indica rootstock and not the thornsless variety. i was surprised to see thorns on the plants growing on the roots.i think i have heard of this on rasberries. kevin
