I am new to hybridizing, are there any good articles I should read?
Also, what would be a good hybridizing subject that is easy to obtain, flowers/grows rapidly, and produces interesting results? |

| Read about Luther Burbank's work . You can find books on him and his experiments in most libraries. |

| Zinnias are interesting to hybridize. Their anthers are easy to grasp with a pair of tweezers (Kelly forceps are even better) and the stigma are easily accessible at the base of each petal. You can make a cross in about a minute. Zinnias grow rapidly and if you have a long growing season, you can get more than one generation per year, in which case you could see the results of a cross the same year that you made it. Zinnias have a wide range of colors, plant habits, and flowerforms, so you have lots of possible hybridizing projects with them. Zinnias bloom over an extended period of time. Their seeds are reasonably large and easy to handle and they germinate rapidly. MM |
