Brugmansia/Iochroma cross

Posted by shadowgirl 7/Memphis (My Page) on

Greetings,
I am wondering if it is possible to cross Brugmansia and Iochroma cyaneam. They are in the same division, class, subclass, and family and if it could be done the results might be very interesting. Below is a link about the iochroma. Any thoughts on the subject would be appreciated. I am also posting this on the brugmansia forum to see if any of the gurus over there have any thoughts on the subject.

Hey,
Is anyone out there? Our should I just feel like the red-headed step-child? lol I am really curious about this and would realy like to open up some dialogue on the subject. The forums have been so slow and mild-mannered lately.

I am not very educated on this subject, but I do know the reason Datura/Brug crosses do not work is because of the different chromosome count between the two.So you may have the same problem here with Brugs & Iochroma crosses. But give it a try and find out what happens.

Good luck,
Linda

I say try it. I don't have an Iochroma, or I would try it. Would love to know if you find anything out.

Yes, Loretta, try it. Last year I crossed a lot different ecotypes of Datura with several Brugmansia hybrids and vice versa, but every pod fell off. I will continue this year and search for a possible "bridge" between them. It only one or two hybrids (brugmansia x datura or Datura x brugmansia) maybe it will be easier to backcross and to cross to one or two more species and so on :)

Loretta and Libby, LMK how it goes with the crosses :)

Does it matter if one parent is tetraploid? The new brug 'snowbank' is supposed to be a tetraploid, maybe you could use it. And what about grafting, does that do anything to enhance your chances?

Hey,
Does anyone know where I might find the chromosome information on Brugmansia and Iochroma? I think I will give it a shot this season. Now I need pollen from the Snowbank Brugmansia.

A friend of mine and I talked about this idea in the 70's. But, neither of us ever tried it. It sounds like a worthwhile project. In hybridizing a lot of ideas get tossed about but often as not, no one ever follows through. You just might get something. My friend was hybridizing brugs then, when no one else was even interested in growing them. He named his one and only selection after a mutual friend, 'Charles Grimaldi'.

Hey everybody,
Well it is that most wonderful time of year again, and I am not talking about Christmas. I have about six different Brugmamsia and two types of iochromaa in the ground. This summer I am going to try my hand at hybridizing a brug and a iochroma. Think I will give grafting a shot, too. Would like to graft a wisteria to some kind of tall rootstock to get a weeping tree. Will have to find what kind of rootstock to try though. Anyway will keep ya'll posted on all of my endevours.

RE: Brugmansia/Iochroma cross

Well, did anyone try the Iochroma -Brugmansia cross?? If so what kind of results did you have?

RE: Brugmansia/Iochroma cross

Loretta has dropped out of GW for some reason, I REALLY, REALLY miss her and would have been very interested in this experiment.

I was curious if anyone had success with the brugmansia - iochroma cross?

Thanks.
