re: propagation of cockscomb

I don't know if this is the right forum for this but here goes -

I had these beautiful hybrid florist cockscombs, some of the most beautiful I've ever seen. I brought some of the past fresh ones home and shed their seed in the garden. This fall I've noticed some plants that have foliage resembling the cockscomb foliage, but the blooms are single and spread up and down the stems, not like the cockscomb at all except for the shape of the single flower, and that they are reddish. Does hybrid cockscomb revert like this from seed or are these perhaps weeds that coincidentally grew in the garden.

    kadnil,

" Does hybrid cockscomb revert like this from seed?"

Yes, F1 hybrids do recombine their genes in various ways, which many people refer to as "reverting". A small percentage of them (the F2s) might resemble the F1 parents.

Cockscomb is for what I know not a hybrid crop. I think it must be weeds that grew at the spot. You should have sown it in a container and handled it like a specialty sowing and carefully planted it in the right spot.
