Unusual hosta

5 years ago I made a cross between h. Variegated and h. Drinking Gourd (or maybe h. Francis Williams)and obtained a good amount of seeds. I germinated them and kept the seedlings until today. 2 years ago I observed a unusual growing habit in one of these hybrids. In April, it first sends out a bulbous flower stalk without the appearence of any leaves. When the flowers are about to open, then the leaves start to appear. I thought that it had accidentally missed its order of growth. But no it happened again this year.
I was wondering if anyone had a similar experience and would any hosta lovers be interested in owning such a freak of nature. Curiosity kills a cat, so the saying goes...Hmmm! |
