leggy oakleaf

I planted an oakleaf hydrangea "alice" in partial shade, which I thought was okay. Last year it didn't bloom. this year, blooms are starting, but the plant is pathetically leggy!! Is this because of the partial shade? Dare I transplant it??

RE: leggy oakleaf

In the northern states like NY, it can get more sun that in places like FL, GA, AL and TX. But how much leggy are we talking about? 2-4 hours of sun would be ok here and would not have much effect on the plant's legginess. Can you post a picture?

This is a late answer but most likely you just need patience and wait for the plant to mature. They are mostly very leggy in the beginning.

Also it doesn't hurt to prune them a bit in the beginning even though it is hard to sacrifice the bloom. My son pruned mine in the winter time when he was very young thinking they were dead. (What was he doing with shears in the first place)?
As upset as I was, the pruned branches filled in nicer and since he didn't get every branch, I still had a couple of blooms to enjoy that year.
