Pee gee tree question

I bought a 5 ft Pee gee hydrangea tree at the end of the summer. A worker at the nursery (a very popular/prestigious nursery here in CT) told me to plant it with the knot/round circular part at the base of the tree right below the ground. I am not sure what that part is called so I hope I am describing this right. I planted it so that that part is just below the surface. In the nursery pot it wasn't buried so now I am wondering if that was bad advice. Did I plant this tree too deep? Will this kill my tree? Thanks in advance for any help.
