I had a fence of them when I was growing up and do not remember any issues that could cause a problem. They can be toxic so keep that in mind and they can release a sap that stains. My mother never fed them any fertilizer and they were not watered either but their requirements are somewhat similar to hydrangeas, meaning keep them somewhat moist and provide afternoon shade (4-6 hours of sun?). I have not heard of it needing acidic soil but maybe someone can chime in. I would venture a guess that slightly alkaline soil is tolerated.

The thing I wonder is if they look well together. It is hard to picture them in my mind as their leaf colors vary greatly. On the plus side, they certainly will not go dormant which means you will have some greenery during the winter months! Have you seen them growing nearby? Ours got between 3-4' high (my mother pruned them about that height).
